Studio 29 is a design practice based in Cairns, working across residential and commercial projects throughout Far North Queensland.

The studio

The studio brings together both building design and interior design, allowing each project to be considered as a whole. This integrated approach ensures spaces are not only visually resolved, but also practical, buildable and suited to how they will be lived in or used day to day.

Since its establishment by Hyaesil Gilligan in 2024, the studio has grown through long-term collaborations with builders, consultants and clients, delivering projects that range from new homes and major renovations through to commercial interiors and hospitality spaces.

Clients come to Studio 29 looking for a clear, considered outcome. The work is grounded in understanding how a space needs to function first, then shaping a design that feels cohesive, refined and lasting.

The designer

Studio 29 is led by Hyaesil Gilligan, whose background spans both interior design and building design.

This dual perspective is central to how she works. Design decisions are always made with an understanding of how something will be built, ensuring ideas translate clearly from concept through to construction.

Hyaesil is known for her direct and honest approach. She works closely with clients to understand what they want to achieve, while also providing clear guidance on what will work in practice. This balance allows projects to move forward with clarity and confidence.

Her work is defined by a restrained, considered aesthetic. Natural materials, particularly timber and stone, are used to create warmth and depth, supported by neutral palettes and a strong focus on proportion, light and detail.

Projects often begin quickly, with ideas taking shape early in the process. Rather than relying on abstract concepts, clients engage directly with materials and finishes at the studio, helping them understand how the design will come together in a real and tangible way.

At the core of Hyaesil's practice is a focus on creating spaces that feel resolved, functional and easy to live in.

Hyaesil holds a Diploma of Interior Design (2008), a Diploma of Building Design (2016), and is a licensed Low Rise Building Designer with the Queensland Building & Construction Commission (QBCC #1179139).
